A generous 3m 19s long trailer and a first look poster were released in succession.
The trailer focuses equally on Deepika as well as co-stars Saif Ali Khan, who also serves as producer of the film and Diana Penty, a runway model who makes her acting debut with Cocktail.
Deepika, 26, plays Veronica, a strong but dark individual in the film. Her character is introduced dressed in skimpy clothes, dancing erotically, and drinking in a nightclub. The trailer has shades of Saif in Salaam Namaste (2005) and Diana Penty's demure character Meera has traces of Deepika's Meera character in Love Aaj Kal (2009). Dimple Kapadia is elegant as ever playing Saif's mother and Boman Irani impresses as his dad even though he has not spoken a single dialog in the entire promo.
The trailer that starts with a triangle of friendship ends with love, tears, anger, and betrayal - laying the film's premise well.
Directed by Homi Adajania and penned by Imtiaz Ali, Cocktail is due for release on July 13.
