Vidya Balan and Farhan Akhtar will play a married couple in Saket Choudhary's Shaadi Ke Side Effects (SKSE), a sequel to his 2006 romcom Pyaar Ke Side Effects (PKSE) featuring Mallika Sherawat and Rahul Bose.
"I loved Pyaar Ke Side Effects, and SKSE is the story of what happens to a man and a woman after they become husband and wife. It begins where every romcom ends. Saket's observation of relationships is simple and that makes it naturally and perhaps sometimes even unintentionally funny, mad and sexy. It's the first time that Farhan and I will be working together. He's so real that everything about our situation in SKSE would seem believable," Vidya told TOI.
Farhan, 38, too looks forward to working with Balan.
"SKSE is a departure from my earlier work as an actor. It's a romantic comedy — a genre I haven't done yet — so it promises to be a new experience. Saket has written a funny yet moving story about simple things that everyone can relate to. Also, I look forward to working with Vidya."
Producer Pritish Nandy says SKSE begins where PKSE ends. It takes the story of Sid and Trisha forward to when they get married.
"SKSE is a funny, clever, wild film full of the fascinating ways love works before and after marriage," says Nandy.
Back in 2008 Saket had said he is ready with the script and explained the story's urban set-up saying:
"While PKSE was about commitment-phobia, Shaadi Ke Side Effects is about what happens to the now-committed man after marriage. This time, he is paranoid about becoming a father."
As to the change in the lead pair, Rahul was not interested in the sequel, Saket did not think Mallika was suitable for a wife's role.
Vidya had first confirmed in December 2011 following the release of Dirty Picture that she has been offered the lead role in the film opposite Farhan.
SKSE will be Balan's second comedy film in succession; she starts filming for Raj Kumar Gupta's Ghanchakkar, opposite Emraan Hashmi, in August 2012.
